Thank you to our Interns of 2024!

It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to our summer 2024 interns, Evelyn Broughton and Patrick Wilton, as they head back to school for the year. We have so enjoyed having them at PBD and have truly relied on their skills to help create some incredible projects! Before they left, we sat down with each of them to learn more about their experience at PBD and in Chicago!

+ Why did you choose PBD to intern at?

I chose PBD because PBD’s values aligned greatly with my own. I really appreciated PBD’s emphasis on open lines of communication across all team members and the creation of a very welcoming work environment. I also fell in love with PBD’s culture from day one, and that has been reinforced every day I’ve worked here!

+ What do you feel like you’ve learned while you were here?

I learned much more than I ever expected to in just a few months! I learned how to better engage with project teams, how to better present project pitches to clients, the nuances of tons of different millwork details, and of course tons of Revit modeling skills!

+ What’s your favorite experience with PBD or in Chicago during your internship?

My favorite experiences with PBD have been getting involved in so many unique types of projects through all phases, and playing softball! I’ve always been a big fan, but it was so much fun getting to play with so many co-workers and getting to know everyone outside of work a bit better! It was also fun to play against other Chicago architecture firms!

+ What are your plans after you leave?

My plans are to enjoy my last year of my Masters program, and then likely make my way back to Chicago to continue my career! It’s sad to realize how fast the summer has gone by, but my experiences here at PBD have been incredible and these are a few months I will forever cherish!

+Why did you choose PBD to intern at?

I chose PBD because it has a great reputation for taking pride in the high quality of their work and for being a fun and welcoming team to work for and with, and now that I am interning here, I can see how true that is. I was also drawn to the firm because as a Midwesterner I have always loved Chicago and was ecstatic to work here for a firm that is native to the city.

+ What, if anything, do you feel like you’ve learned while you were here?

Before I came to PBD I had very little experience in commercial architecture and interior design and now I have gotten a broad look at the field because of the wide range of projects that PBD takes on. I have also definitely gotten much more comfortable with the tools of the trade and presentation skills, something that PBD works hard to promote in the office.

+ What’s your favorite experience with PBD or in Chicago during your internship?

My favorite experience was having the opportunity to attend NeoCon this summer with PBD, it was great to really immerse myself in the Chicago design community and learn what is new in the industry in the showrooms. Definitely a crazy few days trying to see as many as possible.

+ What are your plans after you leave?

This fall I’ll be starting my final year at Syracuse University for their Bachelor’s of Architecture where I’ll be working on my thesis and as a TA for the Intro to BIM/Revit course there as well as an assistant in the Fabrication Lab. Post-grad, I’m looking forward to starting my journey towards licensure and a career in Architecture and Design.
